I will admit, I am a bit out of the MTV loop.

1. There’s a black girl! How nice! But, why, oh why, does she have such an asstastical weave? I respect her right to have one, but why does it look so bad? Integration was mandated by law years ago, bitches. Damn.
2. Is it just OC teens, or do they all have hive-inducing voices? Jeebus. That Tessa girl sounds like a cat dying very, very slowly.
3. I haven’t been to LA in years, but is it really that white out there? I thought Cali was, like, 85% Asian. AND MUST EVERYONE TRY SO HARD TO LOOK LIKE A SIMPSON SISTER?!?

I feel you. I enjoyed the first season of Laguna Beach for some reason and yes I saw the girl and her horribly offensive weave. All that villa living and you can’t get someone to get you hair extensions and tighten you up every week? I mean they do them for us now too.
I just want someone to break it to the black girl that she’s actually BLACK! I guess we’ll leave that for the cops…
Dude, it’s Orange County. You’re expecting to see people of color? As a Chinese-American, I’d avoid Orange County if I could, and I’m from Wisconsin (we don’t get much whiter than here!).
Ditto what Viv said. Diversity is not really what the OC is known for. I only watch occasionally, so somehow I’ve missed the black girl, but I think - and it may just be me (it usually is) - but I’m over teenagers as an entire group. Their voices, their mannerisms, their slang. So NOT cool.
Okay, this is reason #728 on the list of reasons why I “kicked the box” and decided to go TV-free a couple of years ago. The world is filled with really interesting people who look nothing like each other, but you’d never know it from the images we get on TV.
BUT …. Having said that, I’ll add that after a nearly 4-year run sans TV I’m thinking of going back.
I love ENTOURAGE!!!! And, not to mention, BBC is increasing its programming on this side of the Atlantic. YAY!!!
as a native southern californian, i feel so guilty for even watching LB, but i do get a kick outta those shitheads. where i’m from, near LA, pretty much the whole pop is latino and asian. sadly, parts of OC/LA seem to fit the all-white, rich enclave stereotype and wreck it for the whole. i don’t think the grating voice is just OC teens; from my experience, it’s rich teens in general. and i like how where the little high schoolers spring breaked last season (cabo) was where my sister went with her hubby FOR THEIR HONEYMOON AS ADULTS.
Princess: Indeed. Don’t they have stylists?
Faith: True, but if she grew up in that environment, pretending to be “more” black would just be a lie.
Viv: I didn’t know! I thought the state was officially brownified. I suppose the fairer folks must be hiding in enclaves, though.
NG and Yzzle: Yeah, you’re probably right. I vaguely recall bemoaning those voices in college. And I have known many, many privileged kids in my time…I just forgot that *most* of them are fucking irritating shits.
Stols: Amen! I wish there were a cable company that truly allowed freedom of choice, because then I’d sing up for all the on-demands, BBC america, and Food Network. Heh.
I do watch Laguna Beach too. Since the first season. I was going to post soemthing about “Cami” and her horrible weave. Word is she’s Jewish and Black. I know she’s seen Beyonce, Rihanna and Ashanti’s hair. Who the heck told her that stringy mess was cute? And I know her parents paid some money for that rats nest.
As far as tha mannerisms and the way teens talk today, I’m over it too. And that’s not just the “OC” crowd. The “hood” crowd has gotten on my last nerve too. There’s a twenty-something girl in my office who whines all day and has no vocabulary just like these lil’ princesses in Laguna.
I don’t watch TV anymore. Have not watched TV in over two years. I own a TV and watch DVD movies. But honestly I get more out of life without iTV Would probably never have met you Sid if I was home watching TV Yeah? You’re welcome Pimpstres. XOXO Rob
laguna beach is completely addictive and infuriating at the same time. the lack of racial intensity is hardly surprising though and reminds me of my old boarding school in surrey — as of one of the only black girls there, it was OC style in the valleys of england…
nice site btw!
