‘Tis the season.

At some point in the next few days, I’ll compose a long, navel-gazing post about Thanksgiving and the wonderful people I’m lucky to have in my life, I’m sure.

This post, however, is about the other parts of the season: getting fat and spending monies!

First of all, being the selfless bitch that I am, I’ll have you know I tried that Philly cheesecake stuff. Not so great. Really. It’ll do in a pinch–when you just want one spoonful of cheesecakey goodness, but know for sure if you get that frozen Sara Lee jimmy you’ll eat half the thing in a sitting, not that I’ve ever done that before–but it’s nowhere near worth the saddlebag sacrifice of eating real cheesecake.

May I make a suggestion? If you can get over the embarrasment of a shopping basket full of peanut nosh, have some Earth’s Best apple blueberry baby food instead. So sweet! So tasty! So organic! So only 50 fat free calories!

Yes, I am becoming one of those women. Again. My diet is boring me shitless. Well, not actually shitless, because between this, this and this I’m all stocked up on that around here, but I’m getting rather sick of Lean Cuisine and diet water. It’s not all I eat, but it makes up a goodly percentage, and it’s getting old, fast. I’ll keep doing it, but I’m not happy. Especially when I read things like this NYT article on how futile my efforts are.

All of which makes me want to distract myself by spending scads of money. Of course, having just gotten my first real paycheck, that is an option. Alas, Shasta’s fiscal responsibility seems to be rubbing off on me, so I’ve chucked the whole thing into bill payments instead. The overage went into savings. Not fun now, but I’ll be so much happier by this time next year when, according to my budget, this plan puts me about $5Gs in the black. Or, if I chose to toss it all at my student loans, $5Gs less in the credit red.

So no manicures, two-week European vacations, and new fancy wardrobe. I’ll be cutting costs like crazy in 2008. I may get my winter coat re-lined, and hire a tailor to take in (and up) my pants, so there will be no new non-essential fashion purchases for a while. Target is my bestest friend.

Speaking of, have you seen the new Soap & Glory line Bliss-maven Marcia Kilgore is pushing at Target? Is there anyone in the beauty biz who isn’t trying to hock downmarket signature lines at discount emporia? Don’t get me wrong, I actually like the stuff. The Great Shakes hand cream and The Righteous (body) Butter are cheeeeeap ($2.99 and $3.99, respectively) and smell not unlike a really powerful version of Benefit’s delightful Touch Me Then Try To Leave, which, in case you’re wondering, costs about $375808493 more. Yes, I will swap subtlety for savings, thanks. Oh, and lookie here, turns out this isn’t downmarket a’tall, it was shilled in the UK (innuhnational!) and Barney’s Co-Op, first. So there you go, I’ll save a bundle and still get to be siddity.

Like poverty has ever stopped me.

Wait. How did this become a post about dieting and saving money? What the hell has happened to me?

Anyway. Happy tryptophan coma!

And I will attest to the Clean On Me soapy goodness. It smells nice and it left my skin all soft and pet-able!

FWIW…Kohl’s is STILL holding their buy one, get one free sale on a bunch of stuff…including Cashmere sweaters that run $90 (so that’s $45 each when you buy two)!

My 2007 motto was ‘trust the gut’
My 2008 motto will be ‘Don’t Chuck That Penny!’

Hey I have a box of those Fiber One bars in my desk, thanks to Shasta. ha. They aren’t bad, I mean, they aren’t my usual 100 calorie Kudos bars but hey.

You really use that Blueberry stuff? I don’t know what to think about that. That’s the exact brand I bought when the M was a wee bairn and I have too many flashbacks of … I’ll save it.

Anyway, I’m trying to save this year, too. The Latte Factor and all that jazz. Yay to saving money!

If it makes you feel better, I’ll…hell…Sid, there’s absolutely nothing I can do for you about Thanksgiving. It’s just gonna be a big ‘ol butter n’ booze fest. Sorry.

As far as that NYT article, it’s depressing, but hits on some real points. FINALLY someone is saying that the fat in your body is significantly controlled by genetics and your brain. Yes, diet and exercise is significant also, but the impact of what your body has in mind has been downplayed for ions.

Oh yeah, one more thing: I gave up on FiberOne a while ago because it contains aspertame. That cereal is fine every once in a while, however I didn’t want to consume aspertame every day, hence the switch to the oatmeal/flaxseed combo. More time and labor to make, however I enjoy having more control over ingredients, it’s less expensive, and I’m getting more nutritional bang for my buck.

Ok. One more thing. About money. I’m going to be making some fiscal moves in 2008 also. I’d tell you all about them, but that might as well be a blog post. And seeing how I’m ’sposed to be on hiatus ‘n junk… Anyway, ladies, I’m very happy to see you guys taking charge…with fiber and your money. :)

Shasta! I need you in my life!

I’m taking “off” tomorrow and Friday. Back “on” Saturday and Sunday! I can’t avoid the food fest that will be my sisters house. Can’t do it.

    Happy Gobble Gobble.

Shasta, please tell me this is really just a hiatus and not a permanent departure.

    Le Sigh.

Didn’t know that about the Fiber One, do I get points for trying. Teehee!

Have a wonderful Turkey day, everyone. :D :D

I’m with you Mary, I’m missing Shasta’s brand of wit something terrible.

I’m trying to be good on the budget and what I eat. I’ve been getting whatever granola bars are lowering of the cholesterol variety and are on sale for like 2 boxes for 5 bucks for my work day breakfasts.

I’m making a monster double batch of my Mom’s recipe for Mac N Cheese to take to a friends for Thanks giving and my Buddies Mom’s carrot cake recipe to take to my girlfriend’s parent’s thanksgiving too. I swear, being man is just awsome when you get to go to two thanksgiving meals. =)

Have fun and be safe everyone!
